Mini Review: Atonement by Ian McEwan

Atonement - Ian McEwan

I found it difficult to connect to the characters on an emotional level...too much telling. The story itself remided me strongly of Evelyn Waugh, particularly A Handful of Dust, but without his wit or charm, and the reveal of a completely unreliable narator at the end of the story throws the entirety of the narrative into question. The central themes and ideas were interesting, and it was certainly a world I'm familiar with from 20th century British lit, and as a reworking of those particular conventions I think it does have it's points of interest. Not a favourite, but not the worst.
